Artist Statement: "Tony Savino is a New Paltz-based documentary photographer who began his photojournalism career at SUNY New Paltz working for the student newspaper, The Oracle, and the community-based Huguenot Herald. He also held staff positions at the Miami Herald and Times-Herald Record. For most of Savino’s career he worked as a freelance magazine photographer, covering news stories for many of the world’s most prominent publications such as Time, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Paris Match, etc. Savino first visited Haiti in 1987 to cover the first attempt at elections after the downfall of' 'President for Life' Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier. Savino was present at a very bloody election-day massacre that caused the elections to be cancelled. The photographer continued covering political and cultural events in the country and around the island, shared by the Dominican Republic over the past 38 years.
These images are part of a body of work produced over a 6-year period, documenting ethnic Haitians in the Dominican Republic; their families, living conditions, struggle for labor and human rights, and the manifestations of racism they face from a hostile ruling class and state."
